Where’s my refund, Ohio? How to check your Ohio tax refund
Check an Ohio income tax refund with the Department of Taxation’s refund check on OH|TAX eServices or its mobile app, using your Social Security number, your date of birth, the type of tax and whether the return is original or amended. Ohio says an e-filed return with direct deposit generally takes about 15 business days, and a paper return 8 to 10 weeks.
How to check your Ohio refund
An e-filed return takes 2 to 3 days to process after it is sent; a paper return takes several weeks to show up, longer from March to May.
- Online: tax.ohio.gov/individual/refunds, or the Ohio Department of Taxation mobile app. It covers the current year and the two before it.
- Enter your Social Security number, date of birth, the tax type and whether it is an original or amended return.
- By phone: the 24-hour refund hotline, 1-800-282-1784, or 1-800-282-1780 for a person, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
How long an Ohio refund takes
A return selected for manual review does not mean something is wrong; if documents are needed, Ohio sends a notice. Once processing is done, the tool shows a time frame for the refund. Direct deposit is only for e-filers, cannot be changed once submitted, and shows on bank statements as “STATE OF OHIO TAXREFUNDS.” A missing check can be reissued after 30 days, and checks expire after 90 days.
| How you filed | Generally issued within |
|---|---|
| E-file with direct deposit | About 15 business days |
| E-file with a paper check | 22 business days |
| Paper return | 8 to 10 weeks |
| Return picked for manual review | Most within 60 days; allow 120 days before calling |
The Ohio identity confirmation quiz
Ohio may ask you to confirm your identity before releasing a refund, and can pick you tax year by tax year. Use the passcode on the letter at OH|TAX eServices: you get 10 minutes to answer four multiple-choice questions, and up to three tries. If all three fail, you are asked to upload documents. Processing does not start until your answer is processed; check the refund status two business days later. If you prefer to call, or did not file the return, call 1-855-855-7579.
