Where’s my refund, Minnesota? How to check your Minnesota refund

Check a Minnesota income tax refund with the Department of Revenue’s Where’s My Refund system, using your Social Security number, your date of birth and the exact refund amount, or call the automated line at 651-296-4444 (1-800-657-3676), open around the clock. The information updates overnight, Monday through Friday, and shows which of four stages your refund is in and whether you need to do anything.

How to check your Minnesota refund

The same system shows both income tax refunds and the homeowners’ property tax refund.

  • Online: Where’s My Refund at revenue.state.mn.us/wheres-my-refund. You need your Social Security number, date of birth and the exact refund amount from your return.
  • Automated phone line, 24 hours a day: 651-296-4444 or 1-800-657-3676.
  • Questions for a person: 651-296-3781 or 1-800-652-9094, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday to Friday.

How long a Minnesota refund takes

Minnesota does not publish a set number of weeks: it says every return is different, so processing time varies. What slows a refund down is the same list most states give: mailing a paper return, not choosing direct deposit, errors on the return, and returns picked for extra review. Minnesota deposits up to five income tax and five property tax refunds into a single bank account; beyond that, it mails a check. If a deposit bounces because the account is closed, a paper check follows.

Identity verification letters

The department may mail a letter asking you to confirm your identity or send documents, and it stops processing the return until you do. If you did file the return, check that the filing date on the letter matches and contact the department using the details in the letter. If you did not file it, you do not need to respond to Minnesota; report it to the IRS at 1-800-908-4490. Identity theft victims file Form M1ID.

Revenue Recapture: when Minnesota takes your refund

Under Revenue Recapture, the department can take individual tax refunds to pay debts it collects for other agencies or for the federal government, with a $15 fee for each claim. For a prior-year Minnesota tax debt or a federal non-tax debt, call 651-556-3003. For a debt to another public agency, contact that agency. A spouse who does not owe the debt can ask for their share of a joint refund within 18 months.

Property tax refund and Renter’s Credit

Renters no longer file Form M1PR: since 2024 the Renter’s Credit is claimed on the income tax return and paid with the income tax refund, up to $2,720. Homeowners still file the M1PR, and can check its status from July 1. By law, homeowners’ property tax refunds are paid after September 15 and before September 30, and e-filed claims may be paid up to 30 days earlier. Paper claims do not show in the system until July.

Homeowners’ 2025 property tax refunds were raised by nearly 15% in 2026; claims filed before July 15, 2026 were adjusted automatically. Amended returns (Form M1X) can be e-filed from tax year 2025.
