How Minnesota withholding works
Minnesota’s 2026 withholding formula annualizes your pay, subtracts $5,300 for each allowance on Form W-4MN, and applies four rates, 5.35%, 6.8%, 7.85% and 9.85%, starting above $4,700 for single filers and $14,700 for married filers. Minnesota has not adopted the 2025 federal withholding changes, so it uses its own W-4MN; without one, your employer withholds as single with zero allowances. Bonuses can be withheld at a flat 6.25%.
Minnesota Paid Leave
Minnesota Paid Leave started on January 1, 2026. The premium is 0.88% of wages, and your employer may deduct up to 0.44% from your pay; employers must pay at least half. State law caps the wages it applies to at the Social Security maximum, which this calculator takes as $184,500 for 2026.
Minimum wage in Minnesota
Minnesota’s minimum wage is $11.41 an hour for 2026 and $11.87 for 2027. Minneapolis and St. Paul set their own higher rates.
Your federal withholding and Form W-4
Federal withholding is separate from the state’s and depends on your Form W-4: your filing status, the Step 2 box if you have two jobs or both spouses work, and the Step 3 amount for children and other dependents. Pre-tax 401(k), 403(b) and cafeteria-plan health premiums come out before income tax is figured. If you are paid on a 1099 instead of a W-2, nothing is withheld; use the self-employment tax calculator and plan for estimated payments.
