Why there is no Texas income tax on your paycheck
The Texas Constitution says the Legislature may not impose a tax on the net incomes of individuals, a rule voters added in 2019. In 2025 voters added a second rule that bars a state tax on individuals’ capital gains. Changing either would take another constitutional amendment.
Your employer pays Texas unemployment tax, but state law forbids taking any of it out of your wages. The franchise tax is a tax on businesses, not on workers; for 2026 and 2027 a business owes none below $2,650,000 of revenue.
Minimum wage in Texas
Texas follows the federal minimum wage of $7.25 an hour, unchanged since 2009. At 40 hours a week that is $15,080 a year, which leaves no federal income tax to withhold for a single filer after the W-4 standard amount; Social Security and Medicare still apply.
Your federal withholding and Form W-4
With no state income tax, federal withholding is the only income tax on your paycheck. It depends on your Form W-4: your filing status, the Step 2 box if you have two jobs or both spouses work, and the Step 3 amount for children and other dependents. Pre-tax 401(k), 403(b) and cafeteria-plan health premiums come out before income tax is figured. If you are paid on a 1099 instead of a W-2, nothing is withheld; use the self-employment tax calculator and plan for estimated payments.
Questions
How much is taken out of a $60,000 paycheck in Texas?
For a single person paid every two weeks with no W-4 adjustments, about $193.08 federal income tax, $143.08 Social Security and $33.46 Medicare come out of each $2,307.69 paycheck, leaving about $1,938.07. There is no Texas income tax to withhold.
Does Texas have a state income tax?
No. The Texas Constitution bars the Legislature from taxing individuals’ net incomes, so Texas employers withhold only federal income tax, Social Security and Medicare.
What is taken out of a paycheck in Texas?
Federal income tax based on your W-4, 6.2% Social Security up to $184,500 of wages for 2026, and 1.45% Medicare, plus any pre-tax benefits you choose. Texas unemployment tax is paid by the employer.
Do I still file a federal tax return if I live in Texas?
Yes. Only the state return goes away; the federal Form 1040 is the same as anywhere else.
Why is my paycheck different from this calculator?
Payroll systems round differently, and paychecks can include things this calculator leaves out: overtime, bonuses withheld at the flat supplemental rate, after-tax deductions, extra withholding on your W-4, or W-4 Step 4 adjustments.
