The New York City tax is the one that surprises people moving to the city: on a $75,000 salary it takes about $2,661 a year. It applies only where you live, not where you work, so a commuter from New Jersey or Westchester pays none. New York withholding uses the single rates for single filers and heads of household, and the married rates for married filers.
Example: $75,000 a year, paid every two weeks
| Line | New York City | Yonkers | Elsewhere in NY |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gross pay ($75,000 ÷ 26) | $2,884.62 | $2,884.62 | $2,884.62 |
| Federal income tax | −$295.00 | −$295.00 | −$295.00 |
| Social Security and Medicare | −$220.68 | −$220.68 | −$220.68 |
| New York State tax | −$134.07 | −$134.07 | −$134.07 |
| City tax | −$102.35 | −$22.46 | $0.00 |
| Paid Family Leave and SDI | −$13.66 | −$13.66 | −$13.66 |
| Take-home pay | $2,118.86 | $2,198.75 | $2,221.21 |
Living in the city costs this person about $102.35 a paycheck compared with living elsewhere in the state. Someone who works in Yonkers but lives outside it pays the 0.5% nonresident earnings tax instead, $14.42 a paycheck here.
Your New York withholding and Form IT-2104
- Status: single or head of household, married, or married but withheld at the higher single rate.
- Line 1: allowances for New York State and Yonkers. Line 2: allowances for New York City. Each lowers the wages taxed by $1,000 a year.
- Lines 3 to 5: extra dollar amounts to withhold each paycheck for the state, the city and Yonkers.
If you gave your employer only a federal W-4, it may withhold New York tax as if you claimed zero allowances. Pre-tax 401(k) and 403(b) contributions and cafeteria-plan health premiums lower New York withholding the same way they lower federal withholding. Paid Family Leave comes out of after-tax pay.
Your federal withholding and Form W-4
Federal withholding depends on what you put on Form W-4: your filing status, the Step 2 box if you have two jobs or both spouses work, and the Step 3 amount for children and other dependents. If you are paid on a 1099 instead of a W-2, nothing is withheld; use the self-employment tax calculator and plan for estimated payments to both the IRS and New York.
Questions
How much is taken out of a $75,000 paycheck in New York City?
For a single person paid every two weeks with zero IT-2104 allowances, about $295.00 federal income tax, $178.85 Social Security, $41.83 Medicare, $134.07 New York State tax, $102.35 New York City tax and $13.66 for Paid Family Leave and disability come out of each $2,884.62 paycheck, leaving about $2,118.86.
Do I pay New York City tax if I work in NYC but live elsewhere?
No. New York City income tax is only for residents of the five boroughs. Someone who commutes into Manhattan from New Jersey, Connecticut, Long Island or Westchester pays no city tax, though a nonresident still owes New York State tax on wages earned in the state.
What is the New York State income tax rate for 2026?
New York has nine rates for 2026, from 3.9% to 10.9%, and New York City adds 3.078% to 3.876% for city residents. Withholding tables use their own rates, set so the year’s withholding comes out close to the tax on your return.
What is the Paid Family Leave deduction on my New York paycheck?
For 2026 it is 0.432% of your wages, up to $411.91 for the year. It is taken from after-tax pay and funds up to 12 weeks of paid, job-protected leave. For 2027 the rate rises to 0.452%, with a maximum of $451.81.
What is SDI or DBL on a New York paycheck?
New York disability insurance. Your employer may deduct 0.5% of your wages for it, but no more than 60 cents a week. Employers are allowed to collect it but do not have to, and some pay it themselves.
How many allowances should I claim on Form IT-2104?
Line 1 is for New York State and Yonkers, and line 2 is for New York City; the form’s worksheet works them out from your dependents and deductions. Each allowance lowers withholding by about $1,000 of wages a year. If you gave your employer only a federal W-4, it may withhold as if you claimed zero.
Why is my paycheck different from this calculator?
Payroll systems round differently, and paychecks can include things this calculator leaves out: overtime, bonuses withheld at the supplemental rate, after-tax deductions, extra withholding on IT-2104 lines 3 to 5, or W-4 Step 4 adjustments.
