How New Jersey withholding works
New Jersey employers subtract $1,000 a year for each allowance on Form NJ-W4 and apply one of five rate tables. Single filers and married filing separately use Rate A; married filing jointly, heads of household and surviving spouses use Rate B unless they pick another letter from the NJ-W4 wage chart. The tables, unchanged since October 2020, run from 1.5% to 11.8% on wages over $1 million, slightly above the 10.75% top tax rate on the return.
New Jersey UI, TDI and FLI
New Jersey workers pay three state insurance contributions in 2026: 0.425% for unemployment and workforce funds on the first $44,800 of wages, 0.19% for temporary disability insurance and 0.23% for family leave insurance, both on the first $171,100. For 2027, TDI and FLI rise to 0.24% each. There is no local income tax withheld in New Jersey.
Minimum wage in New Jersey
New Jersey’s minimum wage is $15.92 an hour for most employers ($15.23 for seasonal and small employers).
Your federal withholding and Form W-4
Federal withholding is separate from the state’s and depends on your Form W-4: your filing status, the Step 2 box if you have two jobs or both spouses work, and the Step 3 amount for children and other dependents. Pre-tax 401(k), 403(b) and cafeteria-plan health premiums come out before income tax is figured. If you are paid on a 1099 instead of a W-2, nothing is withheld; use the self-employment tax calculator and plan for estimated payments.
