How Missouri withholding works
Missouri’s withholding formula annualizes your pay, subtracts the standard deduction, which equals the federal one ($16,100 single, $32,200 for a married couple when the spouse does not work, $24,150 head of household), and applies brackets from 2% to the 4.7% top rate on taxable income above $9,436. The result is rounded to the nearest whole dollar. Form MO W-4 has no allowances, only a filing status and extra withholding; without it, employers withhold at the single rate.
Missouri now fully exempts individuals’ capital gains from tax, for tax years from 2025. A proposal to phase out the income tax, Amendment 5, failed in the August 2026 primary.
Kansas City and St. Louis earnings taxes
Kansas City and St. Louis each levy a 1% earnings tax on residents and on nonresidents for work performed in the city. Employers withhold it, and nonresidents who work part of the time outside the city can claim back the days worked elsewhere.
Minimum wage in Missouri
Missouri’s minimum wage is $15.00 an hour for 2026, under a 2025 law, with no further inflation increases scheduled.
Your federal withholding and Form W-4
Federal withholding is separate from the state’s and depends on your Form W-4: your filing status, the Step 2 box if you have two jobs or both spouses work, and the Step 3 amount for children and other dependents. Pre-tax 401(k), 403(b) and cafeteria-plan health premiums come out before income tax is figured. If you are paid on a 1099 instead of a W-2, nothing is withheld; use the self-employment tax calculator and plan for estimated payments.
