Alaska’s employee unemployment contribution
Alaska employers withhold 0.50% of each employee’s wages for unemployment insurance, up to the 2026 taxable wage base of $54,200, so the most an employee pays for the year is $271.00. The employer pays its own contribution, 1.50% at the standard rate. The Alaska Tax Division confirms there is no individual income tax and no state income tax withholding.
The Permanent Fund Dividend is federally taxable
The 2026 Permanent Fund Dividend is $1,000 plus a $200 energy relief payment, $1,200 in all. Alaska does not tax it, but it is taxable for federal income tax: it comes on a Form 1099-MISC and goes on Schedule 1 of Form 1040. Nothing is withheld from it, so a family receiving several dividends may owe at tax time.
Minimum wage in Alaska
Alaska’s minimum wage rose from $13.00 to $14.00 an hour on July 1, 2026.
Your federal withholding and Form W-4
With no state income tax, federal withholding is the only income tax on your paycheck. It depends on your Form W-4: your filing status, the Step 2 box if you have two jobs or both spouses work, and the Step 3 amount for children and other dependents. Pre-tax 401(k), 403(b) and cafeteria-plan health premiums come out before income tax is figured. If you are paid on a 1099 instead of a W-2, nothing is withheld; use the self-employment tax calculator and plan for estimated payments.
