Where’s my refund, Wisconsin? How to check your Wisconsin refund

Check a Wisconsin income tax refund with the Department of Revenue’s refund status tool, using your Social Security number and the amount of your Wisconsin refund, or by phone at 866-947-7363. Most refunds paid by direct deposit are issued in less than three weeks, but Wisconsin’s fraud and error checks can hold some returns up to 12 weeks.

How to check your Wisconsin refund

Use the refund amount from your Wisconsin return, not your federal one.

  • Online: tap.revenue.wi.gov/RefundStatus, with your Social Security number and the amount of your Wisconsin refund.
  • By phone: 866-947-7363 toll-free, 608-266-8100 in Madison or 414-227-4907 in Milwaukee.
  • The department also has an online form to ask about a refund by email.

How long a Wisconsin refund takes

With direct deposit, most Wisconsin refunds are issued in less than three weeks; a paper return can take longer. Fraud and error safeguards can delay some returns, e-filed or paper, by up to 12 weeks. The department names three main reasons a refund is held: a credit is under review, you need to take an identity quiz, or the wages on your return do not match what employers reported. A credit review takes about 8 to 12 weeks after the department receives everything it asked for.

Once a return requesting direct deposit is filed, the account cannot be changed; if the bank rejects the deposit, a paper check is mailed.

Identity verification: quiz, PIN or documents

Wisconsin’s identity letter asks you to do one of three things: take a four-question multiple-choice quiz, enter a PIN, or send documents. For the quiz you need the letter ID, the last four digits of your SSN or ITIN and your refund amount, and you get two tries. After that, or if the letter asks for documents, send a photo ID and a document with your name and address within 30 days of the letter, through My Tax Account or by mail. If you do not respond, the refund is denied. The identity verification line is 608-264-4598.

When Wisconsin takes part of your refund

A Wisconsin refund can be intercepted for debts to the Department of Revenue, child support, court-ordered restitution, other state agencies and local governments, the IRS and federal agencies, Wisconsin tribal governments and other states. For a joint refund owed to a state agency or the federal government, the refund is split automatically by income. For state debts call 608-266-7879.

Homestead credit and amended returns

A paper homestead credit claim can take up to 12 weeks; after you answer a letter, allow three to four weeks. Check it after 12 weeks with the same tool or phone numbers. E-filed claims need their attachments within 48 hours, and the refund waits until they arrive.

Amended returns and homestead claims can be e-filed starting with tax year 2025. If an amended refund comes more than 90 days after the claim, Wisconsin pays 3% interest, except on homestead credits.
