Where’s my refund, Michigan? How to check your Michigan tax refund

Check a Michigan income tax refund in Michigan Treasury eServices: open Guest Services and choose “Where’s My Refund,” then enter your Social Security number, the tax year and the refund amount on your MI-1040. Treasury says to wait 4 to 6 weeks after an e-filed return is accepted, or 6 to 8 weeks after you mail a paper return, before checking. The status updates overnight, Monday through Friday.

How to check your Michigan refund

Michigan moved its individual income tax to a new system, Michigan Treasury eServices. During the November 2026 system upgrades, Treasury warned that some web services and call centers would be temporarily unavailable; if the tool is down, try again the next business day.

  • Go to Michigan Treasury eServices from michigan.gov/taxes/iit/refund and open Guest Services, “Where’s My Refund.”
  • Enter your Social Security number, the tax year and the exact refund amount from your Michigan return.
  • Or call 517-636-4486, Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The phone staff see the same information as the online tool and will also ask for your last name, filing status and adjusted gross income.

How long a Michigan refund takes

Once a return is processed, Treasury allows up to 5 to 7 business days to issue the refund. About 10% of returns need more time: missing or wrong information, identity verification, complex returns, and debts or garnishments. If Treasury asks you for documents, allow about 8 weeks after it receives your answer. Paper returns, no direct deposit and errors all slow a refund down. By law Treasury pays interest on refunds starting 45 days after the return is received or the due date.

Direct deposit details cannot be changed once the return is filed. If the deposit bounces because an account is closed, Treasury mails a check within 6 weeks of getting the deposit back.

Identity verification letters

Treasury cannot process a return while an identity verification letter on the account is unanswered, and if you do not respond it treats the return as fraudulent and keeps it on hold. Some letters give a PIN to enter in eServices within 30 days of the letter date; others ask for documents or more information. You can answer through eServices.

When Michigan takes part of your refund

Treasury can apply a refund to state or federal taxes owed for earlier years, debts to the Department of Health and Human Services or other state agencies, child support, Unemployment Insurance Agency debts, an IRS levy and court-ordered garnishments, and sends a Notice of Income Tax Refund Used for Debts. A garnishment can add up to 18 weeks. For state agency debts call 517-636-5265; for garnishments, 517-636-5333. If a joint refund was taken for one spouse’s debt, the other spouse can claim their share with Form 743.

Home Heating Credit and amended returns

Check a Home Heating Credit the same way, in Guest Services, “Where’s My Refund.” It is paid as a State of Michigan Energy Draft that can only be used for heating bills, or sent straight to DTE Energy, Consumers Energy or SEMCO Energy Gas customers’ accounts. The credit is federally funded and cannot be garnished. The 2026 claim form will be available in January 2027.

Amended returns are processed after the current year’s original returns, so an amended refund can take into the next calendar year. Amended returns can be e-filed.
