What the Iowa refund statuses mean
If the department changes your refund amount, it mails a letter explaining why.
| Status | What it means |
|---|---|
| Pending approval or processing | The department has reviewed your return and your refund is being processed. |
| Approved | Your refund is being processed. |
| Direct deposit issued | Allow up to five business days for the deposit. |
| Paper check issued | Allow 14 days to receive the check. |
| No matching refund | The Social Security number and amount you entered do not match a return. Check that you used your Iowa refund amount. |
How long an Iowa refund takes
Iowa expects refund processing to take about 30 days, and says refunds averaged 30 days or less last season. Mailing a paper return, not choosing direct deposit, errors, missing documents and returns picked for extra review all slow things down. Any error in the direct deposit details turns the refund into a paper check. If a check has not arrived three weeks after it was issued, file Affidavit 06-191 to have it replaced.
Identity verification letters
If Iowa needs to confirm your identity, it mails a letter. Respond online through GovConnectIowa’s identity verification link, without an account, within 45 days of the letter date. If you did not file the return, say so there using the one-time password from the letter and the last four digits of your SSN or ITIN. If you miss the 45 days, mail a letter with your phone number, refund amount and a copy of the notice to the department.
The Setoff Program and amended returns
Under the State of Iowa Setoff Program, public agencies such as child support can claim your refund. The department sends a letter explaining what it did, and you have 15 days from the notice to challenge it; for details about the debt, contact the agency. Joint filers can ask for the refund to be divided within the same 15 days.
Paper amended returns can take six months or more. Do not file an amended return on the same day as the original.
