Independent contractor taxes for 2026

As an independent contractor you pay two federal taxes on your profit: self-employment tax, which is Social Security and Medicare, and regular income tax. No one withholds either, so you pay during the year with quarterly estimated payments and settle up on Form 1040 with Schedule C and Schedule SE.

The taxes a contractor pays

Both are figured on net profit, meaning what clients paid you minus your business expenses, not on gross receipts.

Example: $60,000 of profit

A contractor with $60,000 of net profit has $55,410 of net earnings from self-employment (92.35%). Self-employment tax is 15.3% of that: $6,870.84 of Social Security and $1,606.89 of Medicare, $8,477.73 in all. Half of it, $4,238.87, is deducted from income before income tax is figured.

Income tax comes on top of that and depends on the rest of the return: filing status, other income, deductions and credits. Setting money aside from every payment is what keeps April manageable.

Quarterly estimated taxes

You generally must pay estimated tax if you expect to owe $1,000 or more when you file. For 2026 income the payments are due April 15, June 15 and September 15, 2026, and January 15, 2027. Paying at least 100% of last year’s total tax in four equal installments (110% if last year’s AGI was over $150,000) avoids the underpayment penalty even if you owe more in April.

Forms 1099-NEC and 1099-K

For payments made in 2026, a business generally sends a Form 1099-NEC only when it pays you $2,000 or more in the year, up from $600; for payments in 2027 the amount rises to $2,100. Payment apps and card processors send a Form 1099-K when payments to you exceed $20,000 and 200 transactions. All of your income is taxable whether or not a 1099 arrives.

Deductions that lower contractor taxes

Every expense deducted on Schedule C lowers both income tax and self-employment tax:

  • Business expenses: supplies, software, phone and internet for the business, insurance, fees.
  • Car use: 72.5 cents a mile from January 1 to June 30, 2026 and 76 cents from July 1, or actual expenses.
  • Home office: the simplified method allows $5 a square foot, up to 300 square feet, for space used regularly and only for business.
  • Self-employed health insurance, deducted on Schedule 1.
  • The qualified business income deduction: up to 20% of qualified business income. For 2026 the wage and service-business limits do not apply below $201,750 of taxable income ($403,500 married filing jointly), and the 2025 end date was removed from the law.
  • Half of your self-employment tax.

Contractor or employee?

The label on your contract does not decide it. The IRS looks at the degree of control and independence in three categories: behavioral control (does the business control how you do the work), financial control (who pays expenses, can you make or lose money) and the type of relationship (benefits, permanence, whether the work is a key part of the business). Being treated as a contractor means you pay both halves of Social Security and Medicare yourself.

Questions people ask

How much tax does an independent contractor pay?

Self-employment tax of 15.3% on 92.35% of profit, plus regular income tax at 10% to 37% and any state tax. On $60,000 of profit, self-employment tax alone is $8,477.73.

Do I have to pay taxes if I made under $2,000 as a contractor?

Yes. The $2,000 is when a client must send a 1099-NEC, not a tax-free amount. Self-employment tax applies once net earnings reach $400, and the income counts for income tax from the first dollar.

When are contractor quarterly taxes due?

For 2026 income: April 15, June 15 and September 15, 2026, and January 15, 2027.

Can I deduct half of my self-employment tax?

Yes. Half of self-employment tax is an adjustment to income on Schedule 1, which lowers your income tax but not the self-employment tax itself.

Should an independent contractor form an LLC?

An LLC adds liability protection but by default changes nothing on your taxes. The tax savings come from an S corporation election once profit is high enough to cover the cost of payroll.
